Setting Up a Session

STEP 1: Configure the Master Track

Figure 5 – 21 | Configure the Master Track in Reaper – Example of 10 channels Master Track for Auro 9.1 Format Support

Go to View Menu / Track Wiring
It is recommended to display the “Track Wiring Diagram” window to better visualise routing approaches.

Go to Arrangement Area / Right Click in Empty Space / Show Master Track Option
Show the Master track in the arrangement window.

Go to Master Track / Route Button / Outputs for Master Track Window / Track Channels Drop Down Menu
The AURO-3D Export plugin supports the following formats depending on the selected number of channels:

6 Track Channels: Support for Surround 5.1 and Auro Encoded 5.1 input formats.
8 Track Channels: Support for Surround 7.1, 5.1.2, Auro Encoded 7.1 and Auro Encoded 5.1 input formats.
10 Track Channels: Support for Auro 9.1, 7.1.2 and Auro Encoded 5.1 input formats.
12 Track Channels: Support for Auro 11.1, Auro 11.1 (7.1+4H), Auro 9.1, Auro Encoded 7.1 and Auro Encoded 5.1 input formats.
14 Track Channels: Support for Auro 13.1, Auro 11.1, Auro 11.1 (7.1+4H), Auro 9.1, Auro Encoded 7.1 and Auro Encoded 5.1 input formats.

Note that a 7.1.2 format is automatically upmixed to an Auro 11.1 (7.1+4H) Format when applying the Monitor Options Encoded, Binaural or Stereo Downmix.

Note that a 5.1.2 format is automatically upmixed to an Auro 9.1 Format when applying the Monitor Options Encoded, Binaural or Stereo Downmix.

STEP 2: Configure the Master Track I/O

Figure 5 – 22 | Configure the Master Track I/O in Reaper – Example for an Auro 9.1 Speaker Configuration

Go to Master Track / Route Button / Outputs for Master Track Window.
Still in the Outputs for Master Track Window, create each hardware output and assign them to the right output of your audio interface.
It is recommended to configure mono outputs (1 → 1) and not stereo pairs (1/2 → 1/2) for better control on routing’s manoeuvres.

    Mixing in 3D

STEP 1: Insert the AURO-3D Export Plugin in the Master Track

Figure 5 – 23 | Inserting the AURO-3D Export Plugin in the Master Track in Reaper

Go to Master Track / FX Button / FX: Master Track Window / Add Button / AURO-3D VST3 plugin
The AURO-3D Export Plugin treats all audio channels at the very end of the audio chain.

STEP 2: Start Panning Audio Sources

Figure 5 – 24 | Panning a Mono Source into the AURO-3D Export Plugin in Reaper

Go to Track Menu / Insert New Track
Create a new track in the arrangement window in order to feed the Master Track with audio contents.

Go to New Track 1 / Route Button / Routing for Track 1 Window / Parent Channels & Track Channels Drop Down Menus
Set relevant values in the “Parent Channels” and “Track Channels” drop down menus according to the format’s target (e.g. for Auro 9.1 Format target, select “1 – 10” and “10”).
Note that it is perfectly possible to pan a mono, stereo or surround source.

Go to New Track 1 / FX Button / FX: Track 1 Window / Add Button / ReaSurroundPan VST Plugin
Insert the VST plugin “reaSurroundPan” natively provided by the DAW to pan the audio sources in 3D.

Go to Track Wiring Diagram / Track 1 Module / ReaSurroundPan Insert Button / Input Channels Field
Define the number of channel sources. In the example above in Figure 5 – 24, we are using 1 channel for 1 mono source.

Go to Track Wiring Diagram / Track 1 Module / ReaSurroundPan Insert Button / Format Drop Down Menu
Define the audio format. In the example above in Figure 5 – 24, we are using an Auro 9.1 format.

Go to Track Wiring Diagram / Track 1 Module / ReaSurroundPan Insert Button / I/O Button
Map the panner’s outputs. The following Figure 5 – 25 provides correct channels mapping for each available Auro format:

Figure 5 – 25 | Correct Channel’s Mapping for the ReaSurroundPan VST plugin in combination with the AURO-3D Export VST3 Plugin

STEP 3: Listen to the Different Versions of the Mix

Figure 5 – 26 | Monitor Drop Down Menu of the AURO-3D Export plugin in Reaper

Go to Track Wiring Diagram / Master Track Module / AURO-3D Export Insert Button / Input Menu / Input Drop Down Menu
Select the relevant input option in the Input Drop Down Menu.

Go to Track Wiring Diagram / Master Track Module / AURO-3D Export Insert Button / Monitor Drop Down Menu
While mixing, the AURO-3D Export plugin lets you:

      • Listen to a Binaural Version of your mix using Auro-Headphones technology. (Free)
      • Listen to a Stereo Downmix version of your mix. (Free)
      • Listen to an Auro-Codec encoded version of your mix using the Auro-Codec Encoder. (Auro-Codec Encoding License Required)
      • Decode Auro-Codec Encoded content using the Auro-Codec Decoder. In that case, the AURO-3D Export plugin should not be inserted on the master track but directly on the audio track containing the Auro-Codec encoded content instead. (Auro-Codec Encoding License Required)

It is recommended to decode Auro-Codec Encoded contents in relevant track formats. Examples:

      • 5.1 interleaved file that carries Auro 9.1 Encoded content should ideally be decoded in a 5.1.4 track format.
      • 5.1 interleaved file that carries Auro 11.1 Encoded content should ideally be decoded in a 11.1 Auro-3D track format.
      • 7.1 interleaved file that carries Auro 13.1 Encoded content should ideally be decoded in a 13.1 Auro-3D track format.

      STEP 4: Export Your Mix

In order to export your mix, you can:

      • Use the bounce options natively provided by the DAW to export your Immersive Mix, Binaural Mix or Stereo Downmix. (Free)
Configure the Auro-Codec Encoder and export your encoded mix using the Auro-Codec Encoder Export Button. (Auro-Codec Encoding License Required)
